Led by Carlos Manuel Consuegra (Catín), scorer of three goals, Volcán Avileño, Cuba's 15-time starter in first-class tournaments, defeated Villa Clara (5-1) in the National Field Hockey Championship, based in the recently opened synthetic terrain, in this city.
The Ciego de Ávila attack was devastating against a defense that broke down almost from the beginning of the game, when in the 10th minute, Yoán Gutiérrez scored the first goal, which he continued with the first of Consuegra's terrestrial goals, and another one from Geovany Noriega's account. For Villa Clara, Geovany Vera saved the honor in minute 39.
In the remaining matches, Havana defeated Las Tunas (4-1) and Santiago de Cuba (3-1) Camagüey, which suggests that this edition will be more offensive than the previous one, since it is not common that in a first match day the offensive of the participating teams has scored 15 goals.
Ángel Manuel Marín Hernández, provincial commissioner of the discipline, explained that the competition system is an all against all in one round, in which the two furthest behind will discuss the fifth and sixth places, the third and fourth classified will fight for the bronze and the first two will do it for the gold.
Hockey is the flagship sport in Ciego de Ávila, being the most successful, with 22 titles, 5 subtitles and 4 third places in the youth category and 15 gold, 9 silver and 3 bronze medals in the senior category, as well of the 2 championships achieved by women.
