Deputy Prime Minister Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca called for the promotion of construction work in the Humedal Grande Park, a local development project in the municipality of Morón, in the province of Ciego de Ávila, which will take advantage of natural values to promote ecological and cultural tourism with local and foreign clients.

The high-level leader demanded greater support from the authorities and companies in the territory to complete this work, which will bring economic, social and environmental benefits, including the recovery of El Embarcadero community and the water resources of Laguna de La Leche.

Yuney Hamedh Cruz Antigua, project manager, explained that they design various tourism offers: hiking, guided and self-guided excursions, bird watching, and an identity circuit with an aboriginal village, a maroon hut, a Haitian kimbo and a peasant batey.

Visitors will be able to enjoy an area nestled in the Great North Wetland of Ciego de Ávila, declared a Ramsar Site since 2002 for its natural values and international importance; and they will have a reunion with the historical and cultural traditions of the nation, he added.

The development of inclusive tourism, based on the elimination of barriers for disabled people and the elderly, will allow recreation for a greater number of customers and will favor the collection of funds, a part of which will be destined to local progress and conservation of the park, Cruz Antigua stressed.

From this space, specialists from the Provincial Company for the Protection of Flora and Fauna will promote environmental culture, mainly in infants, by addressing issues related to the protection of natural resources, through interpretive techniques that facilitate understanding and raise awareness.

Odey Martínez Llanes, specialist of the Provincial Company for the Protection of Flora and Fauna, when evaluating the potentialities of the avifauna, confirmed the identification of 99 species in the Park area. 18 endemic taxa (10 endemic ones and 8 endemic subspecies) like Cuban Tody, Trogon Bird, Green Woodpecker, Cuban Blackbird, Greater Antillean Oriole, West Indian Woodpecker and Cuban Lizard Cuckoo.

The Cuban crane, a bird in danger of extinction, was sighted in flocks that indicates the second largest population of this sub-endemic species in Cuba, after that registered on la Isla de la Juventud.

An adequate management is made to achieve the permanence of this last bird kind, which includes the realization of controlled burns, whose effects cause the death of animals that are essential for the feeding of them, Martínez Llanes said.

Humedal Grande Park will be presented as an opportunity to enhance the leisure industry, particularly specialized tourism modalities, based on a heritage that will allow offering competitive and quality goods and services.
